The Art of Pipili Applique
A 500-Year-Old Tradition
Pipili, a small town located about 30 km from the sacred city of Puri in Odisha, is renowned for its vibrant Applique work. This ancient craft, locally known as "Chandua," has been an integral part of the Jagannath temple rituals since the 15th century.
The craft involves cutting and stitching pieces of colored cloth onto a base fabric to create intricate patterns. Originally used to make canopies, umbrellas, and decorative items for the chariots during the famous Rath Yatra festival, Applique work has now evolved to include a wide range of products.
Traditional Motifs
The designs typically feature religious motifs including Lord Jagannath, elephants, flowers, birds, and geometric patterns. The vibrant colors - red, yellow, green, and black - are symbolic and hold deep spiritual significance in Hindu tradition.
